Premiered in 1961 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Chorus Pro Musica, Gloria remains not only Polunec's most famous work, but one of the best known choral masterpieces of the century. Like John Rutter, Poulenc's harmonies are both modern and moving. But that's only half of the program. A German Requiem - Johannes Brahms

A German Requiem - Johannes Brahms

On Sunday afternoon, October 22nd, The Michael O’Neal Singers will perform A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms.  This well-known choral masterwork was written by Brahms not as a rite for the deceased, like a traditional Latin Requiem, but to comfort the living, especially those who are grieving the loss of a loved one.

In the words of Michael O’Neal:
“The piece… was written with an understanding that we live but a short time on this earth, and we grieve for those who leave this life before us.  Brahms knew the sorrow experienced by those who grieve and he selected texts that provide comfort to the living in their time of loss.  We have learned that often the individual grief we feel is more completely ‘worked through’ in a community, and…it is imperative that we encounter it in community.  Perhaps that is one of the greatest gifts of music; especially live performance of music that is profound in its depth and meaning, for we experience it in community - a community of performers - a community of listeners - and a combined community of people this day, who mourn and remember. The Brahms Requiem offers us a chance to grieve together.”

Our October 22nd performance of A German Requiem takes place at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Roswell United Methodist Church.  The 155-voice chorus will perform the Requiem in English, to fulfill the desire of Brahms to connect with his audience in offering his musical comfort.  Brahms’ Requiem is based on texts from the Biblical Old Testament, New Testament, and the Apocryphal writings. Vocal soloists for this performance are Michelle Jarrell, Soprano and Brent Davis, Baritone.  Accompaniment will be provided by Tom Alderman on Roswell UMC’s 94-rank Möller pipe organ.  The performance will last approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.

Door tickets for the October 22nd performance are $25 for adults and $20 for students/seniors age 60+.

We sincerely hope that our performance will bring peace and comfort to those from your organization who have suffered loss. We are pleased to be able to extend this opportunity to members of our community in need of the healing that music can bring.

The Germans, French, and Italians don't have a lock on great music! Hear some fantastic works by twentieth century American composers. The Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofé (the orchestrator of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue) is one of the first works to use instruments to make sound effects. William Schuman (the American Schumann) wrote New England Triptych based on works of William Billings, regarded as the first American Choral composer. Variations on America by Charles Ives is exactly what it sounds like – variations on My Country 'Tis of Thee – but in a quirkily light-hearted way.
